Types of Inspections


  1. Scheduled Inspections:
  • Based on risk assessment (scale, nature, management level, etc.).
  • Focus on high-risk premises (Nursing Homes, Hotels, etc.).
  • Owners/managers are usually notified in advance.


  1. Non-Scheduled Inspections:
  • Triggered by public complaints or post-fire incidents.
  • Can occur without prior notice, day or night.


During the Inspection


Initial Procedures:

  • The Fire Inspector presents ID and authorized documentation.
  • Meeting with management to review the Fire Safety Log Book.
  • Discussion on fire plans, safety checks, maintenance records, and training.
  • The fire inspector may ask for management to accompany them on a walkthrough.


Walk-through Inspection:



 Fire Detection & Alarm System:

  •      Make sure that your Fire Detection & Alarm System panel is functioning properly and free of faults.  
  •      Adhere to the maintenance guidelines outlined in Irish Standard 3218:2013. 


Fire Doors/Windows


  • Each door should display a certification label indicating the type of fire door.
  • Are your Fire Doors plainly marked with signs on both sides?
  • Each door should display a certification label indicating the type of fire door it is.
  • Check for any cracks.
  • Make sure Seals are fully intact.


Post-Inspection Findings and Reporting


  • Fire Officer evaluates risks and safety measures.
  • Possible issuance of Fire Safety Notice or Closure Notice for non-compliance.
  • Options to appeal Fire Safety Notices within 14 days on specific grounds.
  • Public access to register of Fire Safety and Closure notices.
